Dental Assistant Requirements in Oregon
Are you interested in working as a dental assistant in Portland or elsewhere in Oregon? Here’s what you need to know:
In Oregon, Dental Assistants may perform basic supportive dental procedures specified by the state dental practice act under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist. There are no state-mandated education or training requirements for this level of Dental Assisting (Dental Assisting National Board, Inc.)
However, in order to perform certain expanded job duties during procedures and treatment, Dental Assistants must earn additional certifications. These certifications can be achieved through 1,000 hours of work experience in another state – like Washington or California – or through completion of certification exams.
For example, in Oregon, a special license is required to take dental x-rays. The x-ray course at Radiance Dental Assisting Academy will prepare you for the examinations required to earn this license.
Other expanded areas of certification include:
- IV therapy
- Preventive care
- Anesthesia monitoring
- Orthodontics
Keep in mind: Your internship hours at Radiance Dental Assisting Academy count towards the 1,000 hours of work experience.
